Building Future Leaders: How iGEMS is Shaping Resilient, Purpose-Driven Young People

At iGEMS, leadership development is not treated as an “extra” — it is at the very heart of the programme. While many initiatives focus purely on technical and academic excellence, iGEMS continues to invest in something equally important: developing confident, emotionally intelligent, resilient young people who are prepared for university, the workplace, and life itself.

Over the past few months, our Grade 11 and Grade 12 students have been immersed in a dynamic Leadership and Life Skills programme designed to help them discover who they are, what they value, and how they can positively impact the world around them.

Grade 11: Building Foundations for Leadership

The Grade 11 cohort began the year by exploring the core values that define the iGEMS culture. Rather than simply discussing values in theory, students were encouraged to reflect on how these principles show up in everyday life and leadership.

One of the highlights of the term was the Vision Board project, where students creatively mapped out their aspirations, goals, and future dreams. Sharing these boards in small groups encouraged vulnerability, confidence, and stronger peer connections, while goal-setting workshops helped students turn their visions into actionable plans.

Communication and relationship-building also featured strongly. Sessions focused on professional email and WhatsApp etiquette, active listening, trust-building exercises, and accountability partnerships — all essential tools for future leaders. The Trust Walk activity, in particular, gave students a memorable and practical experience of teamwork, vulnerability, and reliance on others.

As examination season approached, the programme shifted focus toward stress management and emotional resilience, equipping students with practical strategies they could immediately apply in their academic lives.

Grade 12: Preparing for Life Beyond School

For the Grade 12 students, the programme built on the strong foundations laid in 2025 and introduced more advanced concepts rooted in Positive Psychology and personal wellbeing.

Students explored the internationally recognised PERMA Model, learning about the importance of Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment in achieving a balanced and fulfilling life.

Gratitude Journaling became an ongoing practice throughout the year, encouraging intentional reflection and emotional awareness. Students also completed Vision Boards and SMART Goal Setting activities, helping them clarify their ambitions and map out realistic pathways toward achieving them.

A particularly impactful part of the programme was the VIA Character Strengths framework, where students identified and explored their unique personal strengths. By understanding their natural capabilities, students are learning to lead authentically and confidently.

The programme also addressed the very real challenges students face as they transition into adulthood. Sessions on university applications, work ethic, time management, stress management, sleep science, and mindfulness provided practical tools to support both academic success and personal wellbeing.

More Than Academics

What makes the iGEMS Leadership and Life Skills programme so powerful is its ability to create real-life impact. Students are not only learning concepts in the classroom — they are actively applying these lessons in their daily lives. Whether through accountability partnerships, improved communication habits, increased confidence, or mindfulness practices during exams, the growth is tangible and deeply encouraging.

As Leadership and Life Skills Facilitator Kathy Balshaw beautifully explains in her report:

“The students who will thrive — in university, in the workplace, and in life — are those who know themselves, lead with integrity, and navigate challenges with resilience.”

At iGEMS, we are proud to be developing not only future engineers and professionals, but future leaders who are grounded, self-aware, and ready to make a meaningful difference in the world.
