From Learner to Leader
Damian Dean Classen’s journey is a powerful story of resilience, growth, and determination. After joining the iGEMS programme in 2016 while attending Hoërskool Cillié (Matric 2017), Damian began building the mindset and skills that would shape his future.
He completed his work experience at Schaeffler LuK Africa, where he successfully finished a Production Technology Level 2 learnership—laying a strong foundation in the engineering field.
Driven to grow, Damian went on to complete his N6 in Fitting and Machining at Port Elizabeth College, earning his National N Diploma in Engineering, and qualifying as a Red Seal Toolmaker. He further expanded his skillset with a Higher Certificate in Project Management (Operations Management) at AIE College.
Today, Damian is a Supervisor at Bay Tool & Die Makers, where he plays a key role across multiple departments—from quality control and inspection to reporting and supporting leadership.
The iGEMS Impact
Damian credits iGEMS as a turning point in his personal and professional development:

Through the programme, he developed strong computer skills, self-awareness, and leadership thinking, learning to approach life as the “CEO of his own journey.”
Overcoming Adversity
During his apprenticeship, Damian faced one of life’s toughest challenges—losing both his parents within two years.
Despite the emotional toll, he remained focused and committed, successfully passing his trade test on his first attempt.
This experience shaped his character, teaching him:
