Dreaming Beyond Limitations
Mandilakhe Nathan Gqolana’s journey is a remarkable example of what can happen when ambition meets opportunity, discipline, and belief in oneself.
After matriculating from Paterson High School in 2019, Mandilakhe began his professional journey through a Production Technology Level 2 learnership at Schaeffler LuK Africa, gaining valuable industry exposure and workplace experience early on.
However, his ambitions extended far beyond what many would consider possible.
He went on to study at the University of Cape Town, completing:
- BSc in Physics, Astrophysics and Applied Mathematics
- BSc Honours in Applied Mathematics
- Masters in Financial Engineering
Today, Mandilakhe is a Quant-Trainee at FirstRand Bank, currently working within the Global Markets division alongside traders—a highly specialised and intellectually demanding environment that combines mathematics, finance, and analytical problem-solving.
The iGEMS Impact
Mandilakhe describes iGEMS as a programme that expanded his vision for his future:
“iGEMS assisted in showing me just how big one can dream, beyond the limitations set by one’s immediate circumstances.”
The programme helped him develop confidence in who he was and taught him the importance of communication and networking.
Among the most valuable lessons he gained were:
- The ability to articulate himself confidently
- Understanding how to network effectively
- Learning to embrace opportunities beyond his comfort zone
Overcoming Challenges
One of Mandilakhe’s biggest challenges came while studying at UCT, where he balanced:
- His Master’s degree in a field he had no prior background in
- Responsibilities as a Subwarden
- Leadership duties as Chairman for all Subwardens
Through this demanding season, he realised something powerful:
“The only limitations I had to transcend were those I had set for myself.”
This mindset continues to shape both his personal and professional growth.
Looking Ahead
Mandilakhe’s vision for the future is centred on continuous growth:
To consistently level up spiritually, physically, mentally, and from a business perspective.
Advice to Future iGEMS Students
“Do not bother caring about what other people have to say about your existence. In the end, only you can alter the course of your reality—so consistently level up.”
